CM announces Odisha to be made slum-free by the end of 2023
- Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced that the Odisha government aims to make Odisha slum-free by the end of 2023.
- The CM of Odisha has launched a survey using drones to facilitate a process to provide land deeds to slum-dwellers in five municipal areas across Odisha.
- The land survey was taken in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Rourkela, and Sambalpur civic body areas under the state government’s ‘Jaga Mission program’.
- The state government of Odisha launched the Jaga Mission in 2017 and the slum development associations have been assigned to manage the ‘Biju Adarsh Colonies’ a provision has been made to allocate 25 percent of the municipal budget to these bodies for the development of infrastructure.
- Jaga Mission in Odisha will also provide social and economic justice to the poor as they have an equal right to the benefits of development and growth.
Centre Approves BSNL Rs 26,821 Crore 4G Deal with TCS
- Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) received a nod from Central Government to go ahead with Rs 26,821 crore deal with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) paving its way to launch 4G services in India.
- BSNL will give Rs 10,000 crore worth of purchase orders to TCS soon. The state-run telco will aim to launch its 4G services by December 2022 or January 2023.
- The launch of 4G services, BSNL is also aiming to launch 5G services by August 2023.
- TCS aims to install 100,00 towers for the BSNL-MTNL network with the Rs 26,821 crore offer.
G20 summit to focus on food, energy security
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave for Bali on Monday to attend the G20 summit on November 15and 16.
- Food and energy security and post COVID health issues will be at the top of the agenda in sessions at the summit in the Indonesian city.
- Mr. Modi will discuss plans for India’s presidency of the G20, environment and gender issues and a “greater voice for the global south in issues of of international economic cooperation [and] the need for reformed 21st century institutions”.
India to unveil its long-term low-carbon strategies today
- India will unveil its long-term decarbonization plans in pursuit of its goal to reach a net-zero status by 2070 at the start of the second week of negotiations on Monday at the climate change conference.
- Under the Paris Agreement, countries are mandated to submit long-term action plans with estimated low-emission pathways till 2050 that are consistent with the global goal of keeping temperature rise within 1.5 degree or 2 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial times.
- This is apart from the short-term action plans, called nationally-determined contributions or NDCs that the countries have to submit, detailing the climate actions they are taking over five- or ten-year periods.
- The long-term action plans were supposed to be submitted by 2020 itself, but could not be done due to the pandemic. Most of the developed countries submitted their long-term strategies during the Glasgow meeting last year.
- So far, 62 countries have submitted their long-term strategies, including the three largest emitters — China, the United States and the European Union. India is the fourth biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, if the contribution of EU is considered as a block.
