The Padma awards are one of the highest civilian awards in India and these are given in various disciplines- Literature, education, science, arts and trade, industry and engineering, public affairs, civil services, medicine, and sports. Each year, on Republic Day, these awards are announced. These are conferred by the president at a ceremonial function that is organized around March or April. This year the president announced as many as 128 Padma awards out of which 4 were Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan awards, and 107 Padma Shri awards. Out of these awardees, 34 are women, 13 awards are posthumous and 10 awards are for people who belong to the foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI categories.
Padma Vibhushan
This is an award that is given for distinguished and extraordinary service. This is the second-highest civilian award in India.
Padma Bhushan
This award is given for distinguished service of the highest order. This is the third-highest civilian award in India.
Padma Shri
This award is given for distinguished service. In the order of the civilian awards, it ranks 4th.
History of Padma awards
- The government of India instituted the Padma awards in the year, 1954.
- This award is given annually on the occasion of Republic day.
- This award does not permit to be added up to a title and it can also not be used as a prefix or a suffix to the recipient’s name.
What do the awardees receive?
- The awardees receive a medallion along with a signed sanad by the president of India.
- The recipient is also given a duplication of the medallion that they will be able to wear in the course of any state or ceremonial function.
- The names of these awardees are published in the Gazette of India.
- The total number of awards given in one year cannot go beyond 120 excluding the posthumous and the foreigner awards.
Who decides?
- The Padma awards are given as per the recommendations of the Padma Awards Committee which is created annually by the Prime minister.
- The award committee is supervised by the cabinet secretary and it comprises the secretary to the president, 4-6 distinguished individuals as members, and the home secretary.
- The proposal of the award committee is forwarded to the Indian president and the prime minister for their consent.
