The retirement of a legend
The global hotel industry stood up to applaud the retirement of a stalwart on the 3rd of May 2022. 1929 born Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi stepped from his position as the chairman and director of East India Hotels.
National and international awardee
Almost exactly 14 years before the event, Mr P.R.S. Oberoi was given the Padma Vibhushan by the President of India. This is the 2nd highest civilian award in India. They recognized Mr Oberoi’s pathbreaking work in the hospitality sector. He is credited with putting the EIH group of Hotels on the world map. During the tenure of this luminary of the hotel industry, The Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur was declared the best hotel in the world by the Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards Readers’ Survey. The Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra and The Oberoi Rajvilas in Jaipur were rated the 10th and 11th best hotels respectively. In the year 2010, Mr. Oberoi was recognized by the prestigious Hotels Magazine as the Corporate Hotelier of the World.
Educated in iconic institutions
Mr P R S Oberoi received his early education in the iconic St. Paul's School, Darjeeling. He also received his high-profile hotel management knowledge in the United Kingdom and Switzerland. The Oberoi Group was founded in the year 1934 and is also known for its two river cruise ships including The Oberoi Zahra Nile Cruiser which also runs through the land of Pharaohs, Egypt.
Developed the OCLD as one of the best hotel management training institutes
Mr P R S Oberoi is also credited with improving the Management programs at OCLD which are rated among the best programs in the world. He established a culture in the Oberoi group which he referred to as the Oberoi Dharma. It aimed at creating a world-beating product, accompanied by a similar standard of service and people excellence. He established the culture of The Oberoi Group and its focus on acquiring the best talent in the industry, developing the talented individuals further, and retaining them as super employees.
His successor was also groomed by him
His office space is also a unique idea of world-class work-life balance. He has operated from his concept farmhouse-cum-office space, Oberoi Farms farmhouse on the outskirts of Delhi. He will be succeeded by his nephew, Arjun Oberoi. Arjun Singh Oberoi has been appointed in his place as executive chairman with immediate effect. Mr Singh has served as the group’s executive director and has over three decades of rich experience in the hotel industry. He has been personally groomed by his uncle to take over his responsibilities from him.
