The Republic of India consists of 28 states and 8 Union territories. Every State is administered by a Chief Minister while the Union Territories are administered by the President through an Administrator appointed by the President. Each of the twenty-eight states and three union territories has a chief minister. The Honorable Chief Minister is the de facto executive authority of the state. The office of the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir is vacant.
Among all the chief ministers currently in office, Odisha’s Naveen Patnaik has held the chief minister’s office for the longest period. He was sworn in and joined his chief ministerial office on 5th March 2000. Naveen Patnaik is also the president of his party, Biju Janata Dal. The West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, assumed office on the 20th of May 2011 and is the only female chief minister currently in office in the Republic of India. The state of Telangana is the 29th state of India and was formed on the 2nd of June 2014. The Telangana region was a part of the Hyderabad state in 1956 and was subsequently merged with Andhra Pradesh. The state of Telangana was formed after much protest and strife and a demand for a separate state by the locals. Kalvakuntia Chandrasekhar Rao is the present chief minister of the state of Telangana and he assumed office on the 2nd June 2014. He is also the president of his party, Telangana Rashtra Samithi which is affiliated with NDA.
Mohan Lal Khattar is the chief minister of the state of Haryana. He started as the Chief Minister on the 26th of October 2014. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party which is the largest party of the National Democratic Alliance. India saw the emergence of a new leader when anti-corruption activist, Anna Hazare started a hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Arvind Kejriwal was part of the Anna Hazare movement and he later formed the Aam Aadmi Party. Arvind Kejriwal subsequently won the elections and assumed the Delhi Chief Minister’s office on 14th February 2015.
The Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is among the more qualified of the currently serving Chief ministers. He is a qualified electrical engineer and assumed the Chief Minister’s office on the 22nd of February 2015 and is a member of the JDU or Janata Dal-United which is affiliated with the NDA. The current chief minister of Kerala is Pinarayi Vijayan and he started his journey as the chief minister of Kerala on the 25th of May 2016. He is a member of the Communist Party of India. It is one of the few communist parties in power in India. Arunachal Pradesh Pema Khandu is a member of the BJP and he assumed office on the 17th of July 2016. He is currently serving his 2nd term as CM. The Chief Minister of Manipur is Nongthombam Biren Singh and he assumed office on 15th March 2017. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party which is part of the NDA. Uttar Pradesh CM Jogi Adityanath is a popular national figure who assumed office on the 19th of March 2017. He is one of the most recognized faces of the BJP. The Himachal Pradesh CM is Jai Ram Thakur who started carrying out his responsibilities as the Chief Minister on 27th of December 2017 onwards. He is also a member of the BJP. The Meghalaya CM, Conrad Sangma assumed his Chief Ministerial office on the 6th of March 2018. He is from the National People’s Party which is part of the NDA. The Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio was sworn into the Nagaland CM office on the 8th of March 2018. His party is National Democratic Progressive Party and is part of the NDA.
The Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb assumed office on the 9th of March 2018. He is a member of the BJP. The Mizoram CM Zoram Thanga is the oldest of all the currently serving Chief Ministers of India. He assumed office on the 15th of December 2018. His party is the Mizo National Front which is also a part of the NDA. Bhupesh Banghel is the current Chhatisgarh CM and he assumed office on the 17th of December 2018. He is a member of the Indian National Congress which is part of the UPA alliance. The CM of Rajasthan took his oath to office on 17th December 2018. The Rajasthan CM, Ashok Gehlot is an old name in Indian politics. He is a member of the Indian National Congress. The present Goa Chief Minister is Promod Sawant and he was sworn into the Goa CM s office on the 19th of March 2019. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The current Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang belongs to the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha which is part of NDA. He assumed his Chief Ministerial office on the 27th of May 2019. The Andhra Pradesh is YSR Congress Party’s, Y.S.Jagan Reddy. He started his journey as the Chief Minister on the 30th of May 2019. The Maharashtra Chief Minister is Uddhav Thakeray and he assumed office on the 28th of November 2019. He is the son of Shiv Sena founder, Balasaheb Thakeray and he broke a long-time alliance with the NDA to join the UPA alliance.
The present Jharkhand Chief Minster is Hemant Soren and he assumed office on the 29th of December 2019. He is part of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha which is part of the UPA alliance. Shivraj Singh Chauhan is the current CM of the state of Madhya Pradesh. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and he assumed office on the 23rd of March 2020. The present Puducherry CM is Nadesan Rangaswamy and he took his oath as CM on the 7th of May 2021. His party name is All India N.R.Congress. The current serving CM of Tamil Nadu is M.K.Stalin and he took his oath as CM and started his journey as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister on the 7th of May 2021. His party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is part of the UPA alliance.
The present Assam CM is BJP’s Himanta Biswa Sarma. He assumed office on the 10th of May 2021. The currently serving Uttarakhand CM is BJP’s Pushkar Singh Dhami and he assumed office on the 4th of July 2021. The present Karnataka CM, Basavaraj Bommai assumed office on the 28th of July, 2021, and is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the NDA. He is the son of Somappa Rayappa Bommai, the 11th Chief Minister of Karnataka. The Bommai are only the second father-son duo in the history of the Indian Republic to become the Chief Ministers of the state of Karnataka. The currently serving Gujarat CM is BJP’s, Bhupendrabhai Patel. He started his Chief Ministerial duties on the 13th of September 2021. The present Chief Minister of the state of Punjab is Aam Aadmi Party’s Bhagwant Mann and he assumed office on the 16th of March 2022.
